Chennai: The Chennai Traffic Police has introduced a scheme to inform road-users of the latest traffic updates, by joining hands with 13 FM radio channels. "Our mandate is to minimize road accidents and ensure a hassle-free flow of vehicles. It is essential to keep the public posted of traffic congestion on important routes so that they can plan their travel accordingly," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), M. Shakeel Akhter.
The objective of the 'Chennai Traffic SMS Update through FM Radios' facility is to inform the commuters of traffic congestion or any other traffic related problems. Akhter said efforts were on to give traffic updates to the FM channels through SMS.
These updates are also intended to help commuters to stay away from danger during heavy rains. "When it rains, some subways and roads get inundated. Traffic updates on FM radio will keep listeners informed of such obstructions. Even those listening to the radio at home can inform their friends and relatives going to or returning from work," he added.

The union representing Metrolink engineers is suing the Southern California rail authority to halt plans to activate video cameras
in its commuter trains.
Metrolink said Tuesday the cameras are intended to increase safety after one of its passenger trains collided with a freight train in September 2008, killing 25 people. The engineer was text-messaging seconds before the crash.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen says the cameras are an invasion of privacy and has filed lawsuits in federal and Superior courts in Los Angeles.
Metrolink announced plans earlier this month to activate the in-cab video cameras. The union instead proposes a cell phone jamming system that blocks all incoming and outgoing cell phone calls and texts.

In the near future, waiting might not be the hardest part.
That’s the hope held by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is planning to install technology that will tell commuters when their next train will arrive — a much-anticipated initiative that could arrive at select Brooklyn subway stations soon.
By winter 2010, the MTA plans to introduce new public address systems and customer information screens to all numbered subway lines at 156 subway stations, according to the agency’s 2010-2014 capital budget plan. The initiative will cost $171 million, according to the MTA. The agency has already installed a $213 million train tracking/signaling system at the stations, a necessary first step that make the customer displays viable.

On Thursday, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) launched a color-coded rail-line identification system that’s designed to help transit riders more easily navigate the system.
The changes coincide with the implementation of a 25-cent base fare increase and an additional $1 for parking at MARTA lots, austerity measures that were approved by MARTA’s board of directors to help ensure the future of transit in metro Atlanta.
Under the new identification system, main rail lines – and their deviating branches – will be identified by four primary colors. The changes will minimize confusion, especially for first-time customers, and those traveling on lines that split as well as visitors from other cities who are likely more accustomed to color-coded rail systems. Transit systems across the country typically identify rail lines by color rather than the “end-of-line” designations MARTA currently uses.
The changes in the rail line identification system are part of an overall update of MARTA’s graphic standards. The new standards will eventually be incorporated throughout the system as vehicles and system equipment are rehabilitated or replaced. MARTA will also be revising its written materials to make it easier and simpler for riders to use the system.

The official record of accidents and deaths on the Metrolink commuter rail system is incomplete, marred by inconsistencies and largely hidden from view. The record makes train operations in the Los Angeles region appear to be much less dangerous than they are.
The Times was able to assemble the interactive database and map accompanying this report by drawing on information from several sources, many never before available to the public. To the extent possible, inaccurate or conflicting information was corrected and obvious omissions filled in.
The database suggests that the Federal Railroad Administration's system for tracking hazards is more suited to monitoring cross-country freight haulers than high-speed trains operating in crowded urban corridors.
Only about four of every 10 fatal accidents in Metrolink's records have been reported to the federal agency, which posts the information on its public website.
At least 117 Metrolink system pedestrian deaths and six vehicle deaths do not appear in the federal record.
The federal agency requires train operators to file reports under broad circumstances: an accident at a grade crossing, an accident causing damage to railroad equipment or an accident resulting in loss of life -- except when the death is ruled a suicide.

The 16th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) in Stockholm kicked off, under the theme “ITS in Daily Life”. During four days, over 2500 delegates will attend this annual meeting point of transport executives from around the globe, held in Europe only once every three years, to share high-tech transport insights.
Intelligent Transport Systems and Services are the integration of information and communication technologies in various transport modes. Examples of these include high-tech technologies enabling vehicles cooperating and ‘talking’ to each other, electronic tolling solutions, advanced driver assistance systems, real time traffic and travel information services etc... The continuing goal of the World Congress on ITS is to promote awareness and deployment of these promising technologies for all transport modes.
Mr. Antonio Tajani, Vice President at the European Commission (Transport): “This ITS World Congress is a milestone for pushing deployment of ITS forward, in line with the European Commission's ITS Action Plan.”
Mr. Zoran Stančič, Deputy Director-General at the European Commission (Information Society and Media): “this Congress clearly shows that it is time now for a European large-scale action to give ITS another major push.”
Both EU officials agreed: “An increased use of ITS will bring benefit in terms of safety, the environment, the economy and standard of living. The EU is committed to getting ITS deployed in Europe.”
Speaking at the Congress Opening Ceremony, Gunter Zimmermeyer (Robert Bosch), Chairman of ERTICO - ITS Europe says: “The theme “ITS in Daily Life” reflects the importance of deploying already existing ITS systems. Public-private cooperation is the key to the success of ITS in Europe.”
The Stockholm Congress takes place during the Swedish Presidency of the European Union. Ministers of Transport will attend a meeting in connection with the Opening of the ITS World Congress. High level EU officials will also be speaking at various executive sessions of the Congress.
With participants from over 60 countries, the ITS World Congress is an unmissable event in the global transport calendar.

Three stops, from Birmingham Snow Hill to the Jewellery Quarter stop, have been closed since Wednesday lunchtime after an overhead wire fell.
The operator, National Express, ruled out foul play. The firm said it was working hard to resolve the issue and apologised for the inconvenience.
There are 23 stops when the Metro is operating normally.
It is currently running from Wolverhampton St George's to Soho, Benson Road.
National Express said engineers would be working overnight on Friday.
It was unsure exactly when the Metro would fully reopen, but said people could go on its bus network using Metro passes and these could also be used on London Midland trains.
